Microsoft Messenger 7:MAC Released

I have just downloaded and tested out the latest version of Microsoft messenger for mac, and once again I am very disappointed. We were all awaiting this release because we were promised the ability to webcam with our windows buddies, that however is not the case. It appears that this version does indeed have webcam capabilities but only on corporate accounts running windows communication server 2007.

Other than that massive let down, Microsoft has continued to try and make their apps look like it belongs on vista, it looks completely out of place on my nicely unified leopard desktop.

On the mactopia website for messenger, I was also amazed at the paragraph describing this latest update:

“Conveniently and instantly share files and gather feedback through Messenger for Mac 7. Attach Word docs, Excel charts, PowerPoint slideshows, or even emoticons to your instant messages.”

Have we not had the ability to share files and send emoticons for at least the last 10 years? Stop trying to make this release sound impressive. add webcam, no one cares about anything else!

Thing I have noticed that have been changed:

  1. New icon - I guess its better than the old one
  2. New glossy “Vista” look - once again destroying my desktops mac look.
  3. The ability to search your contact list by name or email (only useful if u have 50+ people online)
  4. Integrated Bonjour List (haven’t tested this out yet)

And thats about it - This should NOT be considered a whole new version, these are simple things that normally are taken care of in small updates.

Well, I’ll be switching back to Adium now, thanks for another useless product Microsoft. Maybe we’ll see webcam in another 5 years.

Your post is exactly what I thought when I downloaded, this tried it out for half an hour and it was no different to MSN 6, 5 or any messenger Microsoft has ever produced for mac, within no time I was back using Adium, I cannot believe they have still not added webcam, anyone would think it was a premium service. Thank you for, what I consider, warning people

Is that any different then when Apple makes all of their Windows software (ie: iTunes, Quicktime, and Safari) look like MacOS. It looks absolutely horrendous in Vista yet they keep on doing it.

You just need to realize that Microsoft doesn’t really care about there Mac software division. Why would they focus a lot of effort developing software for their competitors platform when only 2% are using that platform. It doesn’t make sense.

I was so excited to hear about Mac Messenger 7, but need I say it didn’t last long! I’m so disappointed. Yet I agree with Jason; why would Microsoft spend their time developing software for their competitors.

Anyway, it seems that Messenger for Mac doesn’t actually like a Mac because I’ve just downloaded it and ran the application and it’s crashed my system! Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

You hit the nail on the head, when I downloaded this new version I was excited for one reason and one reason only, the fact that they promised webcam…and I also realized it was only for corporate accounts, which sucks! I use iChat with my gf in England because she has a MacBook as well, but all of my cousins and relatives who live in Brasil use MSN on a PC and I cannot use webcam with them, which again SUCKS!

Microsoft, just get your shit together and stop messing around, how hard can it be to just add webcam to your Mac version. its not like your losing money, you have enough of it Mr. Gates!

    Very very disappointed :(
Surely it can’t be that hard to simply add a webcam function to mac msn.
I mean seriously, much older versions of windows messenger were capable of running webcams so why can’t this supposedly ‘new’ version do it too?

Microsoft, why must you punish us for using mac?

yea this really sucks! i have been waiting for this web cam add for so long time and now still nothing.. shame on you mr bill gates..
