iPhone in Canada Soon! Rogers Update!

For all you Canadians wanting an iPhone, it looks like our time is near. Rogers Wireless has finally released an “Unlimited Data Plan” - Much like AT&T did in the U.S. a year ago. According to Rogers you can add the package to your existing contract for $20 extra per month. The plan offers the following features:
- Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing
- 2500 Sent Text Messages
- 1000 Sent Picture/Video Messages
- Voice Mail
- Call Display
- Name Display
- WhoCalled
Now, Rogers has not “officially” said the iPhone is coming, but considering this package was pretty much the only thing holding back the iPhone’s release, I would assume that it is just around the corner.
In Europe, when the iPhone was released, there was not much warning, I think consumers were only given a week or two notice it was coming. So maybe we will see the iPhone by the months end!
This move by Rogers is a HUGE step for the canadian wireless industry! The only concern I have is about the actual pricing of the phone, will get it at the same cost as our American neighbors, or will we experience the typical expensive Canadian price?
Either way, I know I’ll be having a sleep over outside my nearest Roger’s store in the near future!

but if you are using your unlocked iphone they still charge you, it must be a rogers locked phone or else data charges are huge.

well rogers has not even officially said they are bringing it to Canada. that being said, when it is eventually released, people with existing iPhones will be able to use the iPhone data plans. there is no way rogers will say that you cannot use it.

You don;t think so Jordan? Right from Rogers website ( note the unlimited data EXCLUDES PDA’s , ex: BB, Windows Mobile…. and NON ROGERS phones)
* Plan includes unlimited on-device mobile browsing only. Plan is available on select phones only (PDAs such as Blackberry or Windows Mobile devices, PC cards and non-Rogers certified devices are not eligible). Data usage incurred on ineligible devices, incurred while tethering (using device as wireless modem for laptop) or incurred using non-Rogers (3rd party) applications downloaded to your device will be subject to pay-per-use charges of 5 cents/KB.

hmmmmm well maybe this plan won’t be for the iphone after all! Either way, I now have an unlocked iphone on the Rogers network and although I do not use EDGE I find that the WIFI is more than enough, I can connect to the internet about 80% of the time where ever I am (excluding driving and rural areas) through hotspots.

This is my favourite part:
“r incurred using non-Rogers (3rd party) applications downloaded to your device will be subject to pay-per-use charges of 5 cents/KB.”
Lovely. Considering all the software on the iphone will be non-Rogers and with the release of the SDK it’ll get even worse. Someone mind telling me why Canadians put up with this crap?
I did hear though Telus will be swapping to the GSM (and possibly 3g) spectrum which will mean Rogers might actually have to break out the lube when sodomizing customers in the future.
